Speak: A Reading (Banned Books Week + Bloggers Speak Out)

Alrighty, I wanted to read you guys a nice chunk from the beginning of Speak, but I had to make some concessions, since Youtube has a 10 min. limit.  I cut my little intro and a small section of the book (a list, which you can find under the video), but I kept the heart of the story intact.

So settle in and get ready to Speak Out.

Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson

Here is the little piece I cut from the reading:

THE FIRST TEN LIES THEY TELL YOU IN HIGH SCHOOL:
  1. We are here to help you.
  2. You will have enough time to get to your class before the bell rings.
  3. The dress code will be enforced.
  4. No smoking is allowed on school grounds.
  5. Our fottball team will win the championship this year.
  6. We expect more of you here.
  7. Guidance counselors are always available to listen.
  8. Your schedule was created with you in mind.
  9. Your locker combination is private.
  10. These will be the years you look back on fondly.

  2. I still can't believe there is even a banning controversy over this book. So crazy. I think a lot of good things have happened because of it though. I have read some amazing articles, and it's good timing with Banned Book Week.
