Coming Attraction: The Diviners

I wasn't the biggest fan of Bray's A Great and Terrible Beauty series (I thought the first was okayish, but I had no intention of reading the rest until I had to for a challenge. I wish I'd stopped...). So I really had no intention of reading anything else by her - until I started seeing reviews of Going Bovine, and was so intrigued that I bought the damn thing. (Also, it won a Printz. I don't ignore the Printz.) And Beauty Queens has somehow wedged itself on my to-get list. Bray is no stranger to the interesting concepts, that's for sure. The Diviners...that falls somewhere in between. I am intrigued by this beast of a book (600 pages!!), but I'm not quite sure whether I'll be picking it up. The jury's still out. (Also, I haven't read Going Bovine yet, so I don't yet know whether she can win me over)

The Diviners by Libba Bray
608 pages
Expected publication: September 18th 2012 by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Evie O'Neill has been exiled from her boring old hometown and shipped off to the bustling streets of New York City--and she is pos-i-toot-ly thrilled. New York is the city of speakeasies, shopping, and movie palaces! Soon enough, Evie is running with glamorous Ziegfield girls and rakish pickpockets. The only catch is Evie has to live with her Uncle Will, curator of The Museum of American Folklore, Superstition, and the Occult--also known as "The Museum of the Creepy Crawlies."
When a rash of occult-based murders comes to light, Evie and her uncle are right in the thick of the investigation. And through it all, Evie has a secret: a mysterious power that could help catch the killer--if he doesn't catch her first.

  1. Ha, that's precisely how I felt. I read the first book in A Great and Terrible Beauty and mostly felt meh about it. I started book two and promptly DNFed. I ignored Going Bovine. Then out came Beauty Queens. Since I try to read all of the dystopias, I read it and I loved it. So now Bray's on my read list, and I'm even going to try to get through AGaTB again.

  2. So I've read The Diviners and hmm. You'll like it if you like big sweeping epic tales that, rather than one main character, have a host of main characters...something like friends but infinitely creepier and serious. If you like irrepressible female protagonists, flapper styles and just larger than life. It reminded me of the Great Gatsby movie trailer, honest. Plus the creepy parts are creeeeepy.

  3. I think I DO like those things, Nafiza... =)

  4. You sure do read a lot of books with characters named Evie ;)

    1. I think we might have to get this and read it together, Evie. And wear LS flapper necklaces while we do.

Tell me all your thoughts.
Let's be best friends.
