"Ten Fairy Tale What-Ifs" ~ A guest blog from Danya!

Today's other guest post comes from Danya of A Tapestry of Words, whose awesome FTF2 post on valuable life lessons we should have learned from fairy tales was just featured in my best of 2012 highlights post!
Take it away, Danya!

It's confession time: I am kind of obsessed with the TV show Once Upon A Time. If you are a fairy tale fan (who's not a purist!) then you'll probably love it too. And since Once Upon A Time is all about connecting different fairy tales and their characters together, I thought I'd do my own mash-ups today!

So basically, if the following pairs of characters were friends, this is what might happen...
Five Success Stories
1.) King Midas and the princess from The Frog Prince
Just think about it. Every time she lost a gold bauble in a pond, he could make her a new one with a single touch! No kissing of amphibious creatures required.

2.) Goldilocks and The Three Little Pigs
Because Goldilocks would be able to tell which house was "just right" without any huffing or puffing from a wolf.

3.) Cinderella and The Twelve Dancing Princesses
If any girl knows how to lose an article of footwear, it's Cinderella. And if any girls desperately need to, it's the Twelve Dancing Princesses.

4.) Sleeping Beauty and the princess from The Princess & The Pea
I'm sure with all the tossing and turning the overly sensitive princess would have done, Sleeping Beauty would have woken up a whole lot sooner. Who needs a prince when there's an insomniac nearby?

5.) Rumpelstiltskin and The Pied Piper of Hamelin
Just imagine how many first-born children Rumpelstiltskin could get out of the whole population of Hamelin! And of course, he could pay the Pied Piper handsomely in gold... This could be the start of a beautiful friendship terribly dangerous alliance.

Five Colossal Failures
1.) Rapunzel and The Girl Without Hands
You don't need to be a prince to climb up Rapunzel's long rope of hair...but you do need to have hands. Rapunzel's going to be there for a loooooooooong time.

2.) The Emperor from The Emperor's New Clothes and The Red Shoes
The only thing worse than striding through the streets buck-naked is, well, dancing through the streets wearing nothing but a pair of red shoes.

3.) King Midas and the characters from The Golden Goose
Can you imagine? As soon as Midas joined the parade of people stuck together, they'd all turn to gold. #fairytaleFAIL

4.) The mirrors from The Snow Queen and Snow White
One of them magnifies the ugliness in whatever is before them, the other shows the fairest in the land. I can only imagine they'd be in perpetual disagreement!

5.) The princes from Snow White and Sleeping Beauty
I can picture it now: "I get to kiss her awake!" "No, me first!" "I'm her true love!" "Says who?" *both men begin a duel to the death and the poor sleeping girls remain enchanted*

What highly successful or terribly catastrophic fairy tale pairings can you think of?

  1. Danya, it's so perfect that your post went live today because I'm featuring a Once Upon a Time post, and since that was your inspiration, it made me extra-happy :) I love your idea of mash-ups!

I'm having trouble picking a favorite. 3/4/5 were the most amusing to me.

And for failures...they're all so funny to envision! 5 reminds me of the two princes from INTO THE WOODS and the way they both fall for sleeping princesses, lol!

  2. What a great post! I like those pairings, though I'm not sure I know all of the references. *goes to google* ;)

  3. Imdb has all the episodes of once upon a time the show I have been wanting to start. I guess I know what I'm doing tonight getting caught up on this show.

  4. I would so instantaneously read Rumpelstiltskin and The Pied Piper of Hamelin. I love both those stories. This can only be a good combination.

  5. @A Backwards Story: Thanks, and yay for Once Upon A Time! I am way too addicted to that show, LOL XD

@Michelle Renaud: Thanks! Yeah, I tried to pick fairy tales that were fairly well-known, but ended up going with a couple obscure ones as well :D

@Rachael: Ooooh yes, definitely check out the show! If my post helps to convert you to a fan it has been a job well done ;D (Just don't blame me if you get hooked! :D)

@rich layers: LOL, yes, an excellent partnership from their perspective, but rather dangerous for the poor inhabitants of Hamelin! ;)

  6. I love the idea of King Midas and the princess from The Frog Prince...though that works out well for everyone but the title character ;)

  7. Ooooh, Rumpelstiltskin and the Pied Piper! What an awesome duo, I love that idea!

  8. I always love your FF posts, Danya! Thanks for another great one! I'm especially loving the Rumpelstiltskin/Pied Piper match up.

  9. I love this post! It's so fun and clever, and not something I'd ever thought of before. I particularly enjoy the very dangerous alliance of The Pied Piper and Rumpelstiltskin.

  10. @Jessica Grey: Yes, good point! Things really wouldn't work out in the frog prince's favour, would they? I guess it'd be more of a 'colossal failure' for him :D

@My anxious life: Thank you! :)

@maijareads, @Small Review and @Heidi: Thanks for all of your kind comments! My, the pairing of Rumpelstiltskin and the Pied Piper seems to be a popular one... perhaps the Once Upon A Time writers should take note for future episode ideas ;)

  11. Yea, Danya! Great collection of mash-ups. Alethea Kontis already put The Frog Prince, Cinderella, The Old Woman in a Shoe, and The Golden Egg Goose together, which is one of my all-time favs. What I think we need are some more baddie mash-ups. Any two witches/evil queens are bound to be trouble, but I immediately think of the Troll Queen from "East of the Sun, West of the Moon" and the witch/mother from Rapunzel. They'd do nothing but steal each other's children all day long. Who's gonna call Social Services first?? :)

  12. Jack should have gone to rescue Rapunzel seeing as he's so good at climbing!
