Diana Wynne Jones: August 16, 1934 - March 26, 2011

Much loved children's fantasy author Diana Wynne Jones died this weekend at the age of 76, after a battle with cancer.

I personally have never read anything by her, though I own a few of her books and have a fair few more on my to-read list.  I know a few people who push her work hard, often listing her as one of their all-time favorite authors, and just as often, Howl's Moving Castle and Dogsbody as some of their all-time favorite books.

Many of her books have been reissued in recent times, and she has a new book scheduled to be released this summer, Earwig and the Witch.

She is the author of

and many, many more.

For a lovely tribute to this beloved children's author, see The Huffington Post's "Diana Wynne Jones: An Appreciation"

  1. +JMJ+

I discovered Diana Wynne-Jones many years ago, when I followed a good hunch and read her Chronicles of Chrestomanci. I distinctly remember wondering why in the world she wasn't better known because she was so much better than J.K. Rowling!

  2. This is a sad day.
I've not ready anything by Diana Wynne-Jones, but for some reason her name sounded so familiar. Then I saw she wrote Howl's Moving Castle. I watched the Haiyo Miyazaki adaptation of the book and thought the story was absolutely superb. I remember telling myself I needed to read the book, but I still haven't gotten around to it =[

  3. I also have been meaning to read Howl's Moving Castle...so sad to hear this. I need to get to it now.

  4. I remember hearing about her books a few times, especially with Howl and Enchanted Glass. I JUST bought a copy of Howl a couple weeks ago, and it reached my house the day after Jones passed away. It's very sad. At 40+ books I hope she lived a very fulfilled life and had no regrets. Condolences (sp?) to her family and friends.

  5. I was so sad when I heard of passing on the 26th. I still am sad. I wrote my own post about her.
She was one of my favorite authors and the reason I began to write again. I will miss her.

Tell me all your thoughts.
Let's be best friends.
