CLOSED Banned Books Week Giveaway Hop!

Hosted by I Am a Reader, Not a Writer
&
I Read Banned Books!

It's been awhile since I did a hop, but what better way than to get back in than with banned books?  You know I love me some banned books and am a big supporter of Banned Books Week, so in honor of BBW and the recent shenanigans over Sarah Ockler's Twenty Boy Summer, I am going to be giving away 1 copy!

For those of you who don't know what the eff* fuck I'm talking about, last year there was a big kerfuffle over some d-bag who wanted to ban a few books (Speak, Slaughterhouse-Five, Twenty Boy Summer) for absurd reasons - apparently a book about a girl coping with rape is porn, Slaughterhouse-Five is vulgar, and Twenty Boy Summer is just downright scandalous in its depiction of teens doing things that, you know, teens do...  And the school board in question caved on all except Speak. Bravo.

Recently, the school board that caved to said d-bag decided to "reverse" the decision and put Slaughterhouse and Summer back on the shelves.  In a restricted area.  Accessible only to adults.

Open-minded of them, right?

Well, when I got done saying FUUUUUUUUUUUCK YOUUUUUUUUUUUU to the school board, I realized that I knew what I wanted to give away for BBW:
Twenty Boy Summer, a book that has been on my wishlist for some time.
(So I went ahead and bought myself a copy when I bought one for you.  Takin' one for the team. ;P )

So:

Fill out this form!
I generally don't like to do bonus points (math!) but in this case: +5 for leaving a comment with what you plan to do to get the word out about banned books during BBW.  (If anything. This is not required, I just love to see people's passion during BBW)
INTERNATIONAL
Ends 10/1 at midnight

[*Normally I would have said eff because of the cutesy factor, but then I was like, whoa whoa WHOA - I can't censor myself in a BANNED BOOKS WEEK post!!!  So there.]

You can check out the list of last year's most banned and challenged books here.  And don't forget to visit the other blogs on the hop!

  1. I post on my FB a lot about different banned books and it annoys my friends LOL!

I have been intrigued about this book for a long time thanks for picking it and hosting a giveaway!

  2. You rock :) Awesome post. I will post a review (or two or three) of banned books I have read before or will read by the end of the week.
    Thanks for the great giveaway!

  3. I was furious when I read about the reasons for wanting to ban Speak. That book is fantastic and so beautifully written. If it's banned, I guess I'll get in trouble because I read that with my class every year. I have like 25 copies of the book! Of course, I also read Go Ask Alice and other books that are no-nos. Conformity is so over rated.

Pretty soon they're going to say that The Outsiders glorifies gang violence and ban my all time favorite book. That would make me pop a blood vessel.

  4. I've put up a post on my blog about this week and the books I plan on reading! I'm also going to spam the hell out of my FB and Twitter! Annoy people into action? Y/n?

  8. Since I'm Canadian, I do more for Freedom to Read Week than I do for Banned Books week (but I am planning to mention this to American friends on the internet).

  12. BANNED BOOKS WEEK has opened my eyes up to just how ludicrous it all is. Many of the books that have been banned I'm like WHAT???? Open discussion with friends family & the world in general has ensued. Bring it on.

  13. Love your post! I wrote a blog post about my thoughts on the issue as well. It was basically also saying FUCK YOU to those who would challenge/ban books but not in those exact words ;-) lol I also made some "I Read Banned Books" buttons and stickers for me, my son, my mother, and a few of my reader friends to show our support. My son is so proud to wear his button. He is on his fourth Harry Potter book and couldn't be happier that he is a banned book reader lol. He says that by the time he graduates, he plans to read all 100 on the list.

  16. Nothing! I don't agree with this list. There are so many great books in this list and I can't understand why they are banned. These stories aren't the part of our community/life?We don't have the free will or opinion to read anything we want? I am from Greece, we don't have books which are banned and the teachers encourage children to read such books.

  17. I plan to let my friends read a lot of banned books!
I think that everyone has the right read whatever he wants so I don´t agree with banned books...

  18. will definitely read banned books all this week to show them its OUR choice if we want to read a book or not. plus they ban these books for the most ridiculous reasons, its funny.

  19. I've been tweeting a lot about banned book week. Hopefully that helps get the word out.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  20. Thankfully, I went to a school that thought that ANY book you were reading was good for you. I don't remember them EVER backing down when parents complained about various books.

I like reading banned books because it gives you a social view of the time when it was banned, so I always mention it on my blog and try to encourage others to read it too :)

  21. Hmm well since I'll be too busy to post much on my blog this week I'll just annoy all my friends and family about it :)

  22. Does me having my own post for this hop count as a way to spread the word?

I love your post - and your refusal to censor yourself in it! ;-)

  23. GREAT choice in prize!

    Thx for participating this year!

  24. You know, I think I really take it for granted that I live in such a liberal area. It kind of surprises me that some of these books are actually banned. Seriously?! Everyone should have the same access to books...

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'll be telling anyone and everyone who'll listen about banned books.
It really irks me when people try to make decisions about things they don't know. Books shouldn't be put under lock and key. Especially when they can be used to reach a person.

    ReplyDelete
  26. WTH!!. They also put Twenty Boy Summer into the list? It surprised me.

I have put this book into my wishlist. I dont care what they say. I still want to read it

  27. I'd tell anyone who would listen to me that books shouldn't be banned. Everyone has the right to read anything.

  28. I'll tell everyone i know to READ ALL BOOKS no matter what some crazy people tell them about being too "vulgar" "obscene" "whatever!!" because that's all so subjective! It's all a matter of perception!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I don't like it when anyone tells me what to do and I would hate if someone said I couldn't read a book for some absurd reason! Can't stand the closed-mindedness!! You just gave me an idea to post about a book that I love everyday on FB that has been banned. Thanks for the giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I plan on reading as many banned books as I can as well as tweeting about them!

  31. I'm dying to read this book!

For banned books week, I am planning on adding all of them on my TBR pile, and getting the word out via my blog.

    Thanks!!

  35. I think I might put up some posters in my school next year during banned books week (I've been very sick and I don't go to school that often, so I'm not doing it this year). A lot of people from my school started reading YA because of me, so I think it'll work perfectly! :-)

  37. The best way to bring recognition to banned or challenged books is to read them and share what you've read whether through face to face discussion, FB, Twitter, Goodreads or on your own blog. I think librarians and teachers should get a lot of credit as well for fighting for a lot of books to stay in the libraries and schools.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I have posted statuses on my Facebook and Twitter about Banned Books and plan on writing a blog post this week, linking the lists of banned books and telling people my favorites.

  39. Awesome post! I am particapting in the hop. And I am going read a banned book or two maybe Twilight one of my fave books :)

  40. I plan on letting all of my reader friends know about banned books and to check out books such as this one and Perks!

  41. Hey Misty, I was extremely touched and inspired by your video on reading at your college. I live in a small town in the middle of no where and we only have a tiny library here, but I've been trying to get involved with the library and community. Bring the two together. We have small mini events throughout the year, and I think it would really be good to spread the world on banned books. Knowledge and hold an event....if you want to even call it that, dealing with this week. I'd love to read for my community.

  42. I run a Library and we always celebrate BBW. This year we have a banned books prompt on our Inspiration Wall--a giant chalkboard wall in the Library. The prompt asks students, "What's your favorite banned book?" We've gotten a wide variety of great responses.

  43. Just spread the word about good books that should be banned! The Hunger Games, Vampires Academy...who's to say what we can read and what we can't?

  44. I've been spreading the word about BBW on twitter all week.

  45. I posted an entry on my blog this week.

But the big thing I am doing - I work in an academic library and I am kind of 'in charge' of our Facebook page. I have been posting 2-3 times a day on there about BBW. That gets more visitors per day than my blog does right now so that is a good thing.

    Thanks for participating!

  47. I have posted about banned books in several places but I have told almost everyone I have seen this week about some of my favorite banned books. They like me were shocked at what books have been banned... I even went out and purchased a banned book yesterday. I am going to try to own all the banned books. May take me a while. lol...

  48. i have been recommending some of these books and loaning out copies to my coworkers and friends so they can see for themselves.

  55. Thanks for the great giveaway:)

In my country, no one seems to be aware that there's such a thing as banned books. In fact, when I told my brother about banned books week, he just gave an incredulous laugh and asked if I was pulling his leg. He wanted to know how a book could be banned and why it wold be banned. So, I've made it a point to bring up the topic of Banned Books every chance I got, I joined a Goodreads group for banned books, I tweeted about them, I posted on Facebook and have used every opportunity and available resource to get the word out there about banned books. Many were shocked that Harry Potter series, To Kill a Mockingbird and The Hunger Games were banned books. I even remember reading a post on censorship written by Sarah Ockler during the whole controversy surrounding Twenty Boy Summer being banned and she particlarly discussed the banning of Speak. That was the first time I was made aware of banned books and shared the post on Facebook in an attempt to make others aware. I'm passionate about freedom of choice- especially the choice to decide what I read.

    Thanks once again:)
