TBR Tuesday: Deathless

TBR Tuesday: Showcasing all the books that are currently staring at you from your "Why aren't you reading me?" pile....

On my TBR

Deathless by Catherynne M Valente
352 pages

Koschei the Deathless is to Russian folklore what devils or wicked witches are to European culture: a menacing, evil figure; the villain of countless stories which have been passed on through story and text for generations. But Koschei has never before been seen through the eyes of Catherynne Valente, whose modernized and transformed take on the legend brings the action to modern times, spanning many of the great developments of Russian history in the twentieth century.

Deathless, however, is no dry, historical tome: it lights up like fire as the young Marya Morevna transforms from a clever child of the revolution, to Koschei’s beautiful bride, to his eventual undoing. Along the way there are Stalinist house elves, magical quests, secrecy and bureaucracy, and games of lust and power. All told, Deathless is a collision of magical history and actual history, of revolution and mythology, of love and death, which will bring Russian myth back to life in a stunning new incarnation.

This was one of my purchases in my recent spending splurge, and I bought it without really knowing a thing about it, beyond that it was written by Catherynne M Valente. I adored her The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making, so I was eager to see what Deathless was all about (and it's Russian folklore based! Woot!)
But basically, I have no idea when I'll be able to get to it, and unless there's a big push from people, or someone says something that really piques my interest, it may end up lingering on my shelves for awhile, as so many very good books do...
Anyone read this one? Should it go straight to the top of the pile, or is it a lingerer?

And what's on your TBR pile this week?
