THE BOOKS:
GEEKERELLA by Ashley Poston [book  |  audio]

Geek girl Elle Wittimer lives and breathes Starfield, the classic science-fiction series she grew up watching with her late father. So when she sees a cosplay contest for a new Starfield movie, she has to enter. The prize? An invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. With savings from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck and her dad's old costume, Elle's determined to win - unless her stepsisters get there first.

Teen actor Darien Freeman used to live for cons - before he was famous. Now they're nothing but autographs and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Carmindor is all he has ever wanted, but Starfield fandom has written him off as just another dumb heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, Darien feels more and more like a fake - until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise. But when she disappears at midnight, will he ever be able to find her again?

Part-romance, part-love letter to nerd culture, and all totally adorbs, Geekerella is a fairy tale for anyone who believes in the magic of fandom.

DEFIANCE by CJ Redwine [book  |  audio]

While the other girls in the walled city-state of Baalboden learn to sew and dance, Rachel Adams learns to track and hunt. While they bend like reeds to the will of their male Protectors, she uses hers for sparring practice.

When Rachel's father fails to return from a courier mission and is declared dead, the city's brutal Commander assigns Rachel a new Protector: her father's apprentice, Logan—the boy she declared her love to and who turned her down two years before. Left with nothing but fierce belief in her father's survival, Rachel decides to escape and find him herself.

As Rachel and Logan battle their way through the Wasteland, stalked by a monster that can't be killed and an army of assassins out for blood, they discover romance, heartbreak, and a truth that will incite a war decades in the making.

  1. Oh, too bad about the Geekarella audio. I do like the sound it, though.

Fun chatting with you while you're getting ready. Reminds me when I used to live with roommates and we'd talk while one or more was getting ready. :)

  2. I read Geekerella and liked it (entertaining and sweet, but not mind-blown), and now I'm very grateful I didn't listen to it. There's NO excuse for poorly edited and poorly directed audiobooks these days. Blargh. I do hate when you get a voice actor that just straight-up bugs you with their voice and inflections and pace. If that silly cheesy voice was intentional, that's crap directing. The MC is self-conscious about his portrayal of a ship captain, so that's what should have come through in inflection, not over-the-top Captain Kirk. Double blargh.
