Friday Face Off: Jackson Pearce's Fairytale Retelling series

I recently finished the third book in Jackson Pearce's Fairytale Retelling series, Fathomless, and when I got to the endflap, I noticed the new covers for the entire series. I knew, of course, that the covers had changed because I was waiting (and waiting) for the Fathomless cover to be revealed so I could share it during Fairy Tale Fortnight (we ended up just making our own...). When it finally was revealed, we all talked about how, even though the new cover is nice, we were disappointed that they hadn't kept the series going with the iconic silhouette covers (they could have saved the new covers for reissues, right?), but my thoughts didn't go much further than this. Strange, really, because I normally immediately look around to see what else they've done to the series (ie. how much of it do I hate?)
Long story short, seeing the whole series together made me realize I hadn't done a Face Off with them, so:
Which one did it better?

I'm not going to lie, I do like both quite a bit. But I will ALWAYS like being able to finish out a series in the same style - now my books will NEVER match, and that makes me sadpanda. =/

Last Week on FFO: The US and UK versions of Tonya Hurley's The Blessed went (creepy) head to (back of) head in a very polarizing Face Off - so polarizing, in fact, that the results were a dead tie.

  1. I like the new covers (except for Sisters Red...I find the ax really weird looking) but I LOVE the old ones. The illustration is gorgeous and I love how it looks sort of optical illusion-ey (I have no idea what's that style called ;A;)

  2. IF I had never seen the old ones, I would like, but not love the new ones. BUT. I love, love, LOVED the old ones. I thought they were completely perfect. They are a little bit creepy and they have a secret. And that fits SO well, both for the story itself and for the fairy tale-ness of them. The new covers are insanely disappointing to me. I think they should have done the HC all the same, and saved the new covers for the paperbacks. Le sigh.

  3. The old ones are so amazing! I'm so sad we never got to see that style of cover for Fathomless. The new covers are pretty, but just not as good.

  4. The new ones aren't bad or anything, but the originals are beautiful and different from everything else out there. They really stood out whereas the new ones are similar to other covers.

  5. I love the old covers way more than I like the new covers. In fact, I hope she releases a version of Fathomless for all of us that book the originals. I really want my set to match. Sort of a special edition ya know.

  6. Forgot to check the email follow-up comments. Posting another comment. I will say I love the cover of Sweetly more than Sisters Red. I haven't read Sisters Red yet so I am not sure which story I prefer.

  7. The new covers PALE in comparison to the old ones. I LOVED that the old ones were twisty and creepy and completely original. I'd never seen any book cover like it (aside from THE SPACE BETWEEN TREES). I will admit that I like the second and third new covers. Because, 1) Colours, and 2) They're iconic.

    OLD COVERS for me.

  8. I like the new covers, but they're pretty standard. The original covers are more unique and I like the silhouettes.

  9. The new ones are ok, but the old ones are gorgeous, I would be much more enticed to read them.

  10. I think I prefer the originals this week. The new ones seem to commercial and movie like. Bleh.

  11. I really really preferred the first covers. Not to say the new covers are bad - by any means. But I just loved the cleverness of the first covers. I'm not that upset that it doesn't match.

If I had the creative juices I'd try to make a fathomless cover that matches the other ones. Anyone up to the challenge?! :D

  12. WHY DID THEY REDO THESE COVERS? *smashes everything in site and launches missile at Little, Brown*

    *pants*

Okay, I may be overreacting a smidge. HOWEVER, the originals are two of my very favorite covers of ALL TIME. The new ones are okay, I guess, but really boring. The stopped being innovative in favor of being run of the mill. DO NOT APPROVE.

  13. My favorites are the old-style solid color silhouettes. Much more likely to stand out on the shelf. I think the new ones would tend to blend in with all the other books.

  14. +JMJ+

As beautiful as the new covers are, I, too, really hate it when they don't wait until all the books have been done in the original style to issue a new design.

My vote is for the originals, because the optical illusion is clever. =)

  15. For the original covers, I really like Sister's Red, but Sweetly creeps me out (a lot). And of the new ones, I really don't like the Sister's Red cover, but don't mind the others.

  16. I absolutely love the old covers (even though I didn't *love* Sisters Red and haven't gotten around to Sweetly yet). I think the new ones are boring. Who made the decision to change them? Bad move.

  17. Ack, I DEPLORED the cover changes in this series. Why go from something great to something so terrible? The new ones just look so incredibly generic and blah. I would not pick up any of them based on the covers--but that's exactly what made me pick up and read the blurbs of the old ones.

  18. Definitely the old ones. The new ones are unoriginal, and I think the red coloring on the Sisters Red cover looks wrong, look it should be more red or yellow than the awkward orange color that it is.

  19. The new ones are pretty, but I prefer the old ones. The older ones had that spark of creativity that the newer ones are lacking, imo.
