Historical/Retelling, 384 pages
Published March 11th 2014 by Knopf Books for Young Readers
A Southern girl. A wounded soldier. A chilling force deep in the forest.
All collide at night’s darkest hour.
Seventeen-year-old Violet Dancey has been left at home in Mississippi with a laudanum-addicted stepmother and love-crazed stepsister while her father fights in the war—a war that has already claimed her twin brother.
When she comes across a severely injured Union soldier lying in an abandoned lodge deep in the woods, things begin to change. Thomas is the enemy—one of the men who might have killed her own brother—and yet she's drawn to him. But Violet isn't Thomas's only visitor; someone has been tending to his wounds—keeping him alive—and it becomes chillingly clear that this care hasn't been out of compassion.
Against the dangers of war and ominous powers of voodoo, Violet must fight to protect her home and the people she loves.
From the author of Strands of Bronze and Gold comes a haunting love story and suspenseful thriller based on the ancient fairy tale of “Tam Lin.”

I love the legend of Tam Lin!
ReplyDeleteMy family and I are huge Civil War buffs...A southern girl born and raised...love a good spooky tale...
ReplyDeleteI'm such a fan of fairytale retellings that are set in a unique time period… And that cover is purely mysterious! ^^
ReplyDeleteI loved the first book she wrote and am excited for this one!
ReplyDeleteI have a huge interest in the Civil War, so this would be a great read for me!
ReplyDeleteI am most excited to read this because i read Strands of Bronze and Gold and I ADORE her writing style. I would read anything she wrote just based on that one book. It was amazing. I also love Tam Lin retellings.
ReplyDeleteI still haven't read the first book yet, but I'm interested in reading Strands of Bronze and Gold. I hope to enjoy this one after reading the first novel.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Jane Nickerson's debut novel!
ReplyDeleteStrands of Bronze and Gold was SO good! So creepy. Nickerson does a fantastic job of making you realize very very slowly how wrong things are; you don't realize it until it's too late. I can't wait to read Murk and the Midnight Hour.
ReplyDeleteI feel like the blogoverse skipped over this book, especially after all the buzz with the first one! I've been dying to read it since Strands.
ReplyDeleteOOh! and now I have some new books to add to my TBR list! I hadn't heard of these books before, but I'm really excited to check them out.
ReplyDeleteI have never read this author, but I have heard about her debut book being so good. It is on my TBR list and I will put this on it also.
ReplyDeleteBecause I love to read
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Tam Lin. I just finished a copy of Pamela Dean's Tam Lin, and I have memorized (from listening to it so many times) to Tricky Pixie song Tam Lin. I enjoyed Nickerson's take on Bluebeard, so I'm curious to read this one!
ReplyDeleteHere's a better question - why wouldn't I want to read it? I mean seriously, this book sounds so amazing! I love fairy tale retellings and I love books set in this time period, and I love YA, so this sounds like a home run for me. Unfortunately I haven't had the chance to read Strands of Bronze and Gold, but I did recently buy a copy for my Kindle so I'll hopefully be able to read it soon. I would LOVE the chance to read The Mirk and Midnight Hour and share it with my family, who all love books like this.
ReplyDeletesounds like a book I would so enjoy!!!!
ReplyDeletethank you for the giveaway!!
I really love historical fiction and love Emily's review. Sometimes Civil War fiction is so heavy and depressing (for obvious reasons) that I am interested in a "lighter" CW read. Thanks for hosting a giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI love reading about stuff set in the Civil War era, it's always so inventive.
