Friday Face Offs Bite!

Soooo...it seems in the typical Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasty, there are really only 2 types of covers: those with bare-chested men on the cover, and those with bare-midriffed/cleavaged women.
Like these 2 covers we saw earlier in the week:

So what draws you in more?  Fabio or Fabiette?  ;p
Or do you despise these types of covers in general?
What's your absolute favorite PNR/UF cover?

Last Week on FFO: The US and UK versions of the upcoming The Dark and Hollow Places went head to head.  You guys made some excellent points, talking about how covers with girls on them are really common, and how the barbed wire hear was sort of "concentration camp-ish" -- but the US version seemed to represent the series as a whole, and fit the rest of the books best, and it won by a pretty big margin.
To me, it's the clear winner.  Velvet thought the "girl lounging" wasn't creepy enough, but to me, it looks like she's dying (or dead) or having some kind of attack, and the almost-eye-contact adds a sort of piercing quality -- you can't quite see them to tell if they're blank and glazed over, or just hopeless.  Love it.

  1. I despise those cover styles with the white hot passion of a thousand suns.

I've tried to enjoy UF, really I have. But so far it's a no go for Briggs, Showalter and Cole.

I will continue in my quest to find UF that doesn't make me wanna hurl (although I DO have to admit Briggs wasn't that bad, but still not for me.)

  2. I don't particularly care for either types of covers, but if faced with a purchase that was based soley off of book covers, I'd go for Fabiette. I'm not really impressed by hunkiness and six-pack abs (is there something wrong with me?!) Besides, I'd assume that whoever is on the front cover is a representation of the main character, and I much prefer reading about a gal than a guy.

Fabio will definitely catch my eye, but I'd be more comfortable reading a book in public with Fabette on the cover. =P

You're right that Paranormals are currently boast the least creative covers in Romance. I think that's because they're still relatively new and there isn't enough symbolic "shorthand" to put on the cover instead.

  5. While they catch my high, I usually steer clear of these. So yeah basically I'm with Vamp :)

  6. The Fabriette looks almost sassy, I guess, and sure Fabio doesn't look half-bad. But I like to read in public (not to mention if I buy books in public!), so I would actually prefer them more clothed than that!

  7. The reading in public thing is a good point. I WOULD NOT read a bare-chested-male book in public. But I have done on the scantily-clas lady book, so...whatever. It's like, the Fabiette signals to the world someone who's kick-ass and not afraid of her sexuallity, while the Fabio cover just signals there's going to be some smut, period, and who cares what else.
