Top 5 Fairy Tale Villains

Here's my final vlog of Fairy Tale Fortnight, and I thought I'd spend it on VILLAINS.  We all love a good villain, right? And fairy tales are known for them.
I'd love to hear yours in the comments, and if you know of any good adaptations that have great villains (whether they're completely, deliciously evil or sympathetic takes on villainhood), I'd love to hear about them!)

  1. Yes, my number one villain would be Rumpelstiltskin! Such a creepy little man, lol! and my second choice would be the Wicked Queen from Snow White - did you read Fairest of All: A Tale of the Wicked Queen by Serena Valentino? I just picked it up a few days ago, it's suppose to be a prequel to Snow White, and I think it is told from the Evil Queen's point of view! I can't wait to read it this week :)
Thanks for sharing your list! Happy reading!!!

  2. I love villains!

I like that you picked Bluebeard, Rumplestilskin and The Snow Queen--three villains that were so big that they got the title rolls in their fairy tales! Bluebeard is such a creeper...why did women keep marrying him?

My favorite villains are always the ones who have really viable motives. That's why I tend to like the various witches as well! The Snow Queen is one of my all-time favorites, because again, she really wants to/believes she is helping. Breadcrumbs was amazing.

    Great video!

  3. Excellent choices! Rumpelstiltskin would have to be my #1 for the same reasons you list. WHY does he want a baby?! I'm also really enjoying what the writers of Once Upon a Time are doing with his character and his motivations.

I also consider the parents of Hansel and Gretel to be some of my fav villains, or at least my most curious-making villains (doubly odd, as the kids end up back with their father). But the idea that they're not step-parents like in so many tales, but that they're still willing to abandon their children out in the woods always gave me the creeps.

  4. Margie - no, I don't think I've ever read Fairest of All. I'll have to look into that.

    Thanks, Heidi!

Marissa - I LOVE what they're doing with Mr Gold! I was very anti- his character in the beginning and now he's one of my favorites. And it's a really clever use of the child aspect of the story (not only wanting his son, but also...procuring?...Henry for Regina.)
And yes, the Hansel/Gretel parents are really something else. In fact, I think next year I'd like to do a video about parents in fairy tales in general...
