Eat Like Austen: Shrub!

Since I missed last week's Dinner & Movie night, today we're having a double feature! That means that Beth is back with not one but TWO Eat Like Austen recipes! If you've missed any of them so far, a master link to Beth's posts can be found here! And make sure to stop back by tonight for the second recipe of the day!

This one isn't a meal, but a drink- specifically, a shrub (which dates back to the 1600s and has been consumed pretty much always since then. It's very refreshing in the summer- it's basically fruit, sugar, and vinegar, cooked into a syrup. The end result can be diluted to desired strength in water (or carbonated water- my favorite), drizzled over ice cream, added to a cocktail, etc.

So, what do you think? Does this sound like a tasty treat or a total pass?
For me, it sounds like a Regency-era berry lemonade-esque bit of sweet-tart deliciousness, and I. Am. Ready.

  2. That sounds fantastic. I love ACV. Does it taste kinda like kombucha?

    1. Kinda, but more sweet (and there's no tea, so no caffeine or tanins)

  3. Yep! I would give it a go. I have some frozen berries and apple cider vinegar and sugar... might have to make it sooner rather than later.

    Thanks so much, Beth!

  4. I have never heard of shrub. To me, that would be a bush! 3-4 days of marinating fruit in vinegar sounds a bit dodgy to me, and then waiting weeks for it to brew is something I'm unlikely to try, but it's very interesting :)

  5. Interesting. I think my husband would think I was crazy and would chuck it thinking it was something I forgot about.
