THE WORLD OF BURN OUT | guest post + giveaway from Kristi Helvig

Today we're welcoming debut author Kristi Helvig to the blog! Kristi is here to talk about the world of Burn Out, her recently released post-apocalyptic, dystopian thriller! I don't know about you, but beyond loving this colorful cover, I love me a Last Man (or in this case, Last Woman) type of story — give me a good post-apocalyptic depressive fest any day — so this one is definitely on my to-read list!
Check it out below, and then enter to win a copy for yourself!

Setting is such an important component of BURN OUT as the story takes place in the future after our sun has started to burn out way ahead of schedule. The sun has turned red giant and all of the lakes, oceans, and rivers have long since dried out, so the only water available is gleaned from molecules in the air. It’s a scary, harsh world that has left most people dead. The main character, 17-year-old Tora Reynolds, is one of the few survivors but she’ll die as well if she can’t find a way to a more habitable planet. Here is a scene depicting the world from her viewpoint:
The winds remained still and the first cracks of sunlight punched through the darkness. Dark red streaks of light permeated the sky, relentless in their assault on the night. The bright orb blazed like the eye of an angry demon. It would overtake the night, day by day, piece by piece, until there was no more dark. Someday soon it would be everlasting daylight, all day, every day. Blazing light with no reprieve, until it swallowed the Earth and burned out completely. Only then would it be eternal night.
As Tora’s ability to get enough water diminshes along with the molecules in the air, she fights for survival at the same time that she realizes her fellow survivors are even deadlier than the planet.

Burn Out by Kristi Helvig

Dystopia/Post-Apocalyptic, 272 pages
Published April 8th 2014 by EgmontUSA
Most people want to save the world; seventeen-year-old Tora Reynolds just wants to get the hell off of it. One of the last survivors in Earth's final years, Tora yearns to escape the wasteland her planet has become after the sun turns "red giant," but discovers her fellow survivors are even deadlier than the hostile environment.

Holed up in an underground shelter, Tora is alone--her brilliant scientist father murdered, her mother and sister burned to death. She dreams of living on a planet with oceans, plants, and animals. Unfortunately, the oceans dried out ages ago, the only plants are giant cacti with deadly spines, and her pet, Trigger, is a gun--one of the bio-energetic weapons her father created for the government before his conscience kicked in.

When family friend, Markus, arrives with mercenaries to take the weapons by force, Tora's fury turns to fear when government ships descend in an attempt to kill them all. She forges an unlikely alliance with Markus and his rag-tag group of raiders, including a smart but quiet soldier named James. Tora must quickly figure out who she can trust, as she must choose between saving herself by giving up the guns or honoring her father's request to save humanity from the most lethal weapons in existence.

  2. This is a really cool concept and it certainly reminds me of the fragile balance of resources that sustain life on earth. Just a shift in one of them and human life is pretty much over. That's a pretty overwhelming thought. Thanks.

  3. I would love to read this because I love YA sci fi books, and I especially love them when the main character is in a survival situation and must be creative in order to obtain the basic necessities for life. I am really excited about Burn Out and would love to have a copy to read and share!
