Spotlight: Maleficent Movie Trailer Discussion

source
Us fairy tale lovers constantly have our ears pricked  for news of the next adaptation, continuation, reinvention, or anything with even a whiff of the fairy tale about it, so of course many, many of us have been eagerly awaiting the long talked-about release of Disney's Maleficent.
So I give you: trailer. Check it out, and then let's discuss!

I'm trying not to get my hopes too high, because I've been burned by big budget retellings with all star casts before. (I'm looking at you, Snow White and the Huntsman. And there's a glance in there for Mirror Mirror*, too...) They always had stunning trailers, very heavy on the gorgeous aesthetics and dramatic moments, which of course makes you eager for the movie — but then when it came down to it, they didn't have much else. Gorgeous as they are (and they are really, really gorgeous; wardrobe departments, film crews, I salute you), in the end... hopes = dashed.

But it's hard not to get my hopes up with this one, because it looks like they might finally be on to something. Angelina Jolie as Maleficent is one of those perfect casting scenarios that agents must dream about, and it looks like she's going to bring just the right blend of sympathy and gleefully malicious madness to the role. Combine that with an intriguing backstory and Elle Fanning's vulnerability and softness as Aurora, and I think there's potential for a really winning combination, and I. Am. Excite.

Who else is excited for this one? Do you think it will live up to the hype, or is this another sad flop that will somehow manage to get a follow-up?

*Which won't keep me from watching and tweeting the sh*t out of it if it wins the voting for our FTF twitter chat.

  1. I am quite excited for this movie. I read a great article about it in my Entertainment Weekly a few months ago. I love how Angelina got prepared for the role. I just hope it lives up to what everyone wants.

  2. I am so excited for this movie. I think it will probably be amazing. I started watching Mirror Mirror quite a while ago and never finished it. I probably should.

    1. Well, so far it's winning in the voting for the FTF watch-and-tweet-along, so maybe you can watch it with us on Sunday!

  3. If they let evil be evil, and good be evil (with a better PR firm), then I will be very excited. If it's yet another "oh, she was just misunderstood" trope, then I will scream and throw things at the screen. But I will watch it anyway because OMGTHOSEWINGS.
