Defending Jane Austen's B*tches

This is something I've been thinking about for awhile now, and Wednesday's #AIATwitterChat solidified what I wanted to say. I'd love to hear your thoughts, not just about the women I mention, but ANY Austen characters (male or female, villainous or not) that you think deserve a second look.
Leave your thoughts in the comments, and feel free to make your own response blogs or vlogs and drop me a link!

  1. Great vlog - really interesting. I never really hated any of the characters from Pride and Prejudice but Miss Bingley was a witch. You've given me a lot to think about for when I reread it.

  2. This is quite interesting topic. I would have liked to hear your thoughts on Lucy Steele, I have recently watched the BBC adaptation of S&S and was reminded how much I disliked/loathed this character.

    1. By all rights, Lucy Steele should really have been in this video - but I just can't bring myself to defend her yet, little weasel... lol

  3. I found your discussion on these gals interesting, Misty. I totally agree about Caro and Mrs. Norris. I'm still not sold on Mary Musgrove, but I do acknowledge that she's not bad just selfish and insecure. Lady C well yeah, power went to her head.

Now to add to the list, I can't stand Elinor and Maryanne's sister in law, Fanny. If she had been like Caro who was scared of her future that's one thing or like Mary who must accept being unliked, yeah okay... But this gal, she's got it all and she's stingy and mean-spirited anyway. I can see being protective of her brother's interests, but her meddling wasn't for that so much as her family's reputation and connections. To be fair, family connections meant more for those folk than now. I won't say she was evil, but she certainly wasn't good.

Fun thoughts! I love pondering the villains and near-villains as much as the heroines.

    1. UGH FANNY.
There is absolutely no defense for her. Horrid woman.

  4. Fanny (S&S) is probably the one character I have absolutely no sympathy for.

  5. What about poor Mr Rushworth!, Maria marries him because he's rich, and then has an affair with Henry Crawford! She thinks he's odious and dimwitted... but is that any reason to betray him and have an affair! No. He seemed like a genuinely kind hearted person and i'm sure would've tried his hardest to make Maria happy

    1. Good one! Not only does she do over Rushworth, but she also really screws with Julia, honestly. I mean, she's engaged and knowingly messing with her sisters marriage prospects, which is especially a big deal then, when her future security depended on marriage (and Maria was VERY well settled, so she had nothing to worry about); on top of that, to do that to a sister is pretty despicable. Part of me wonders if part of her competitiveness with Julia prompted her to be impulsive and run off with Crawford... Either way, though, strong case for her being one of the bitches! lol
