Friday Face Off: Fury & Envy

Because it's impossible (apparently) to finish a series out on one unified cover theme, this week's Face Off features Elizabeth Miles' Fury trilogy, which got a mid-stream cover switch. The original covers: wild, evocative and memorable, IMO. The new covers: a bland Stepford Wives-meets-Lauren Oliver's Delirium cover-redos mash-up.
Not that I'm trying to bias you or anything.
But the publishers must like the new covers more, or they must be selling better, because the third book doesn't even have another option.  Both versions have pretty fonts, though...
So, which would you reach for? Would you pick either of these up to see what they were about, based on cover appeal?
Which one did it better?

original covers
vs
new covers

Last Week on FFO: The original US cover of Rachel Hartman's (epic, amazing) Seraphina went up against the colorful, updated (snazzy new award-medaled) version, and though some loved the purple pop, and everybody agreed that the font on the updated version is just fantastic, the old version won out in the end.
Winner -------> (but you really can't go wrong either way...)

  3. I really love the old covers. They are pretty, especially Fury. That cover makes me want to read the book.

  4. I'm really split on this one but I think I'm going to go with the original covers because I love it when they put dresses on covers.

  5. Oh no! The originals were so bad ass! Why did they change it? Boooo! ;)

  6. Original by far, though I guess I should wish they'd had the crappy ones all along, since I never would have read Fury, which sucked ass.

  7. I was so mad when they changed the covers. The originals were absolutely beautiful. The new ones are generic and it doesn't catch the eye at all. I wish I knew why they do this...

  8. Original, hands down. The originals really pop and make it seem interesting. The new versions...I'd barely pick them up to see what they are about.

  9. I really like the originals better! The new ones aren't as interesting and the girls are just stunning in the original design.

  10. I like the originals better. They stand out more and make you interested while the new ones look like any other YA book.

  11. I'm not sure which book covers I adore more. It's like 50/50 for me. For 'Fury', I like the old book cover the most because those red things surrounding the model on the new book cover over power it too much for me and for the second book 'Envy', I rather the new cover over the old, because the hair looks dreadful on the old book cover. So this week I'm not picking one. I look forward to next weeks Friday Face Off :)

  12. I bate when publishers switch cover half way through! I like the original covers to fury.

  13. The interesting thing about this set is that the two covers give a totally different impression of the books. Not having read them, which one is more accurate? You seem to like the originals better, Misty--does the passionate, almost out of control nature fit the stories better?

As far as which would make me pick them up, the first, hands down. The second are pretty though, and I do love the font.

  14. I haven't read them either, Nancy! But the series is based on the mythological Furies, so to me, the first set conveys that so much more than the bland, vacant second set.

  15. Also...Christina - you are becoming my favoritest person.

    It needed to be said.

The original covers, of course! Just look at the hair!!!

  17. have to say both are pretty equal to me..... maybe like the first ones a tad better. :)

  18. I think both are kind of YA generic... but at the time of Fury's release I was obsessed with that fiery red hair! The way that the blonde hair blows both ways kind of bugs me. It's not natural!

The "flowers" in the new covers look like fungi or something. I don't understand either of the sets... maybe if I actually read them?

My vote goes to the old covers.

  19. Jeezuz! why in the heck would they change from those original covers? I hate when pubs do that. Luckily I usually end up with the first cover so I can't complain haha.

  20. I like the original covers. Something about the facial and expressions and the hair really say "fury" and "envy" to me. The redesigns could be any girl, and the flowers are almost taking over (I haven't read them so I don't know if there are actually important flowers in the series somewhere).
