World Book Night 2013 Line-up

After the success of World Book Night in the UK, the literacy campaign made its debut here in the States this April (and I was a giver!). After compiling titles from suggestions over the past couple of months, the WBN board has released the list of titles that will make up the half-million books given away for the 2nd World Book Night in April of next year.

Next year's line-up is very diverse, crossing genres, age-groups, eras and even languages. I'm sure you guys will see some familiar faces (and can probably guess at least one of the 3 titles I applied to be a giver for...), but I'm curious, with such a range of titles, which ones you guys have read, and which - if any - you find surprising choices.

Let me know in the comments what you think of the books chosen for the next round of giveaways, and if there are any books you wish would have made the list! (Personally, I'm a little bummed to not see any of my suggested titles (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Oryx and Crake, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower); I thought they would all have made for excellent discussion-starting books, but I thought Perks especially would have been perfect timing, ad people are often more inclined to read a book when a movie has just come out...Maybe next year.)

You can find out more about how you can get involved in World Book Night here, or follow all of World Book Night's goings on through their Facebook page and Twitter!

  1. I've signed up to be a UK giver this year. We have some awesome books on our list and I like that there is always a really good mix of books that represent all types of readers on both of these lists.

  2. I love that they have Tina Fey! Woot. Many I haven't heard of before but The Handmaid's Tale, Fahrenheit 451, Looking for Alaska. Great choices there.

  3. Fiona, you were actually the reason I signed up to be a giver! I remembered your posts about WBN and thought it was awesome, so AS SOON as I saw it was coming to the US I was allll over it! lol

Heather, Looking for Alaska and The Handmaid's Tale were 2 of my 3 choices! (And I love Fahrenheit too, but my town did a big thing with it a few years ago, so I think everyone was fairly blanketed with it...)
