Friday Face Off: 13 Little Blue Envelopes vs. The Geography of Girlhood

These two aren't exactly cover twins, but Maureen Johnson's 13 Little Blue Envelopes and Kirsten Smith's The Geography of Girlhood should do remind me of each other. So this one is a pretty straight-forward face off where the faces are, erm...off.  Not knowing a thing about them other than the covers (so not choosing based on author appeal) would you reach for either of these?  And if so, which one?
Which did it better?

Last Week (well, 2 weeks ago, but who's couting...) on FFO:  Past Perfect went head to head with The Diamonds, with the adorkably quirktastic cover for Past Perfect easily snagging a win.

  1. Hmm, this is tricky because I'm not particularly drawn to either of them.

I think it'd have to be 13 Little Blue Envelopes, just because I prefer the colours and positioning!

  2. 13 Little Blue Envelopes! The pose is cocky and confident leading me to expect a more fun book. I also like the hit of an air mail envelope in the blue and red colors along the edge. Add in the appeal of the title (I love letters and there is a certain "oooh, what's in those envelopes") and I would probabally grab the book and read the back.

I don't care for the tatoo-echoing writing on the other girl, and her hesitant pose makes me think this will be a book about bullies/abuse. (I don't know what that book is about, but I feel bad as I know I've been seeing the title around a lot lately!)

Everything from the colours to the model's pose in 13 Little Blue Envelopes gets my vote.

But I agree with Tea that I'm not really drawn to either cover.

  5. I'll be contrary and say Geography of Girlhood because I see the water in the background. With the word Geography on the cover and the water I expect to be traveling or at least something with a beach setting. Can you tell I am ready for summer? :)

  6. I do know that in the end I would have wished I had picked up 13 Little Blue Envelopes though...but your rules said by cover only. :)

  8. Before I cast my vote, I have to ask-- Does anyone know why the lopped off heads became such a trend? It's just so...weird looking.

Now that's out of the way, my vote goes to 13 Little Blue Envelopes even though that cover doesn't really blow me away. I like the colors better, and the pink and blue around the border make me think of those old fashioned envelopes!

The Geography of Girlhood (which is an awesome title) has such a weird looking cover. The girl's skin tone...it's washed out, and it makes her look sickly and weak. And then her hips look disproportionate. It could be where the image cuts off (as in, if they showed part of her legs, maybe they wouldn't look disproportionate). Or, maybe someone got a little photoshop happy, I don't know. But the left side looks a little bulgy compared to the right side. Does anyone else notice that?

Also, I bought 13 Little Blue Envelopes when it was first released. This was before I'd ever heard of book blogs, so I usually just scanned book covers until something caught my eye, and then I would read the synopsis. Apparently the cover interested me enough to make me reach for it!

  9. A couple of thoughts: first, I would never hang anything on my wall that cut off the faces; second, if I were to try to guess at the contents of the story based on this art I think they're identical.

I'll pick The Geography of Girlhood as I like the seascape background better.

  10. Honestly, I'd probably pick The Geography of Girlhood because:

    1) I like the title better.
    2) The girl looks more like a normal girl and less like a model.

  11. Neither one particularly draw me in but I think I'm going to go with 13 little blue envelopes

  12. 13 Little Blue Envelopes, because the pose is sassier!
