Friday Face Off: The Dark and Hollow Places

When I went through my wishlist on Goodreads earlier this week (to remove some books because I finally broke down and bought them!), I noticed that a lot of the listed covers had changed.  And for the most part, I wasn't pleased with the changes.  But maybe it's just me.  Anywhoodle, here is one that changed: The Dark and Hollow Places, 3rd book in the Forest of Hands and Teeth books. I was a little torn about it.  I do have a definite favorite, but I see where they're going with the change, and I don't totally hate it.  In fact, if this was the first I'd ever seen for the series, I'd probably call it striking and memorable, but now, after being a fan of the series and the covers, it just doesn't quite hold the same power for me.  But I want to know what you think.
Which one did it better?

http://www.thebookrat.com/2011/01/friday-face-off-unearthly.html>Last Week on FFO:  Well, there wasn't actually anything last week because we were in the middle of Winter Wonderland.  But the week before that, Unearthly faced off against itself.  I'm still a little torn myself, but the answer to you all seemed pretty clear.  You loved the red dress.  Though two of you did make some pretty good points in favor of the blue dress:  Velvet said "the red makes it look vampire-ish" and Casey said "I can't help but wonder why she's facing the forest fire in a gown?"  Good question!

  1. I might be wrong on this but I think the picture w/ the girl is the US cover, and the barbed wire heart is the UK edition.

That being said, I feel like the US cover w/ the girl on it is more telling, and fits what the story is about better. Wire heart vs. awkwardly placed girl w/ dead eyes... Being that this is a creepy zombie book... I'm going w/ dead looking girl.

  2. Ok. I admit I've only read the first book so I can't really comment on how fitting the covers are for the story, but I'm gonna have to go with cover #2. First of all, because pictures of girls on covers are all too common (even though many are, admittedly, gorgeous.) The second cover makes me think...is her heart dark and hollow? Has she fenced it in and away from love? Why has she done so??? Um. yeah...I'm going with the second one =)

  3. The first cover is the best! The other looks plain and kind of cliche.

  4. I actually like number 2 best, i think the barbed wire is quite telling for the story.

  6. I like the barbed wire heart more, even though it could be on a Face-Off with Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma.

  7. I think the first is prettier but the second seems more indicative of the story, so I'm torn.

  8. Having not yet read the books (they are on my list to be read, though!), I will say that the first one is more attarctive to me. The 2nd cover somehow reminds me of a concentration camp, I suppose from the wire, but maybe this is relevant for the 3rd book.

Anyhow, I am excited to read the series and think that since this is the 3rd book, fans of the first two are likely to read it regardless of the cover, right?

Thanks for sharing; I love the idea of competing covers "Facing Off"! Very cute!

    Happy Friday (and reading)!

I'm going with the first book because I'm more familiar with the covers that have models on them, and I like the continuity.

But I generally tend to prefer models without covers so that I can imagine what the characters look like for myself.

  11. That's a toughie. I adore the covers that have come out so far but as others have said, the gorgeous girls on the covers are becoming a bit cliche so the UK edition does add a different flare. Still am partial to the US version, though, since it's what I've seen so far.

  12. I actually don't really love either cover...I love the series, though. I cannot wait for book three, no matter what it looks like!

  13. I haven't read the books, so I don't really know, but I kind of prefer the first one. The orangey-red hues are reminiscent of bloodshed and violence to me. When I look at the other cover and see the barbed wire heart, it just looks like something that's already done (and I think it has, on the cover of a book about incest. wish I could remember the title). That with the gray coloring make it too non-descript for it to really convey a lot of emotion, in my opinion.

  14. I think I definitely like the one with the girl on the cover best. The barbed wire heart reminds me of Forbidden, plus I just connect more with a cover if it has a person on it -- she looks really forlorn and it makes me wonder what's wrong.
