Winner of Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson!

Yesterday marked the end of Banned Books Week and the Speak giveaway.  Though I was really wishing I had more time for BBW (there was so much more I planned to do!), I am glad that I got a chance to share some of Speak with you and that one of you is going to have a copy of the book for yourself.

And just who is that person, you ask? Well, it's....

WANDA!

Wanda didn't have any thoughts she wanted to share on censorship, but others of you did, and I would like to share some of those with you:

"Censorship sucks, and it seems to be doing more harm than good. I know that gets said a lot, but it's true." ~ Kim

"Freedom of speech/thought is one of the most important things for every society, it gives individuality to each person and allows people to be themselves. Also, writing helps people to express what is on their minds if they do not know how to express it by speaking. It is part of human nature to express themselves on way or another, and nothing is better than with personal words/thoughts that can be read by someone who is interrested of knowing them, so it is a lack of respect to censor those words if they are not affecting you directly, I mean, no one is making you read it, it is your own choice. So, if you do not like it it is your own issue, let others have their own ideas about it." ~ Carolina

"My favorite quote on the subject: Censorship is to art as lynching is to justice. -Henry Louis Gates
The biggest irony for me was seeing a book about censorship (Fahrenheit 451) being censored. They completely ignored the message of the book and condoned what the book condemned. It's really shocking and saddening to me."  ~ Titania

"anybody who likens rape to porn has got to be f**ked in the head....that man has serious mental problems..." ~ Kisah

"I feel censorship of any kind is wrong.  If there are books or movies out there that you don't like the topic, then find something else to read or watch.  People have a right to express themselves." ~ Heather

Thanks to everyone who entered and spoke out during Banned Books Week.  And keep it up; there's nothing to stop you from speaking out the other 51 weeks of the year.

Congrats, Wanda!  Your book will be in the mail as soon as I can get it to the post office (and, um...find it on my many bookshelves...)
=D

  3. Just stopping by to say hello to the bloggers I haven't visited for a while - it's amazing how quickly we can lose touch so I thought I'd have a catch-up, see what you were up to.

  5. When you read this book, you can feel Melinda's feelings and understand her problems. Many teenagers have the same problems that Melinda had. I think Speak is a great book; I recommend this book to all high school students.
